Shop for School Tax-Free before School Begins; Virginia Sales Tax Holiday is August 1–3
July 21, 2014

School supplies selling for $20 or less per item and articles of clothing, including footwear, selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax during the Virginia Sales Tax Holiday scheduled for Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 3.

Families with children in Prince William County Public Schools are encouraged to take advantage of these savings to prepare their students for the upcoming school year. Check your school’s Web site or call your school for a copy of the 2014–15 supply list. For a directory of schools, go to pwcs.edu and click on “Schools,” then select the directory by grade level.

Beginning July 28, SPARK, the Education Foundation for PWCS, will collect school supplies at the Kelly Leadership Center to help ensure that all student have the back-to-school basics they need to return to school ready to learn. The Kelly Leadership Center is located at 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas, VA 20112
Most-needed items include backpacks, 3-ring binders, tabbed dividers, folders with pockets, spiral notebooks, loose-leaf paper, colored pencils, pencil boxes/bags, tissues, hand sanitizer, marble composition books, ink pens (blue or black), No. 2 pencils, washable markers, crayons, highlighters, glue/glue sticks, rounded scissors, index cards, and graph paper.

First Annual Health Screening and Health Fair
PWCS and Inova have partnered to offer free physicals, vision/hearing screenings, concussion training, enrollment assistance for Medicaid and FAMIS programs, and other free giveaways.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 26th, 9AM-1PM at Hylton High School.  Call 703.967.3772 to make an appointment.

Principal's Advisory Council 2014-2015
Tyler's Advisory Council is in need of 3 parent volunteers to serve on the Principal's Advisory Council.  Communities continuing to need representation are Transfer students, Greenhill Crossing, and Haymarket Station.  CLICK HERE to learn more about the council and to submit a form for consideration.

2nd Annual 'Stop Hunger Now' Event Big Success
On Friday, June 6th, Tyler hosted its 2nd annual 'Stop Hunger Now' event.  Gabrielle, a student at Osborn Park High School, took the lead again and organized a wonderful evening.  She was able to raise enough money to package 20,000 meals.  Volunteers from the community came together and worked their magic.  With their team work and enthusiasm, 20,000 meals were packaged between 6-8PM.  Be sure to visit http://www.stophungernow.org/ to learn more about how you can help to stop world hunger!
Mrs. Chamberlain Honored as 'Counselor of the Year'
The Prince William Regional Counselors Association recognized Julie Chamberlain, Professional School Counselor, on May 15 for her leadership.  Mrs. Chamberlain was named Counselor of the Year. "Mrs. Chamberlain is a remarkable professional whose impact can be felt both schoolwide and Divisionwide. She is truly one of those colleagues who lifts up those around her and transforms the climate of a building," said Jennifer Perilla, principal of Tyler Elementary School. Deborah Ransom, Supervisor of Elementary Counseling commended Chamberlain on her leadership skills, use of data, advocacy skills, and her ability to work with others cooperatively.

Red Grammer Visits Tyler!
The students had a blast learning about respect, responsibility, acceptance, and valuing diversity when Red Grammer came to Tyler on Friday, January 10th.
