Only One Week: Stop Hunger Now
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead
With only one week to go, they need your help.  Marissa and Peyton, Tyler students, are taking on world hunger.  Please help their cause by sending in a check made out to 'Stop Hunger Now' or by donating at https://www.gofundme.com/2c7jmppk.  No donation is too small.

Career Day Volunteers Needed
Image result for career day volunteersAttention All Parents and Teachers!
Tyler’s Career Day is Friday, June 3rd, and we need your help! We need additional speakers to share their expertise about their job/Career. So far we have a pediatrician, a veterinary dental specialist and oral surgeon, and a mechanic. The fire department will be here, as well. We need 8 more speakers for the morning sessions that run from 9:15-11:30 am. In the morning the 3rd-5th graders rotate to 6 different speakers. In the afternoon Kindergarten-2nd graders hear two presentations during their regular Encore time. We would also like some college age students to come and present on what college is like for them, and what they have to do to prepare for the Career of their choice. Please let me know if you or a family member could help with any of these slots we need to fill.
Thank you so much!

Multicultural Night @ Tyler on Thursday, June 2nd from 6pm-7pm
Tyler's Multicultural Night will be on Thursday, June 2nd from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

This is a great opportunity for parents, friends, families and students to teach others about ancestry, share you roots, and showcase unique customs.

We already have some great music, fashion, food, and games to share.  It's not too late to sign up if you're interested in sharing your own cultural heritage!

We would like to have all of our Tyler Tomcats represented during Tyler's Multicultural Night!  Paper outlines of children holding flags will be going home in May 18th Wednesday Folders.  Please decorate it to represent your family's cultural heritage.  The finished product needs to be returned by May 27th to be displayed. If you would like to decorate more than one, click here for additional copies.

Tyler STEM Showcase 2016
The Tyler STEM Program has just completed its fourth year! Our amazing mentors have been with the program since its inception. They are:  Sydney King, Lead Mentor; Caitlin Nyugen, Robotics Lead; Allie Curran, Science Lead; Hazel Kim, Math Lead; and newcomer Emily Childress, Science Mentor. They plan the activities and run the meetings. The students had a blast during the month of their grade level meetings, and also at the STEM Showcase on Monday, May 9th. Paula King was the visionary behind the program and made it all possible through the grants that she acquired. Thank you to all!!!
Watch DOG of the Day
Thank you to Mr. Houle for being Tyler's Watch D.O.G.S. Volunteer!

Tyler's New Activity Room is Finished
Tyler recently held their ribbon cutting ceremony to recognize the official completion of their new activity room. Jeff Zavalanski, with Hammerhead Construction, and Jesse Mason with PWCS, were on hand to receive accolades and gratitude for a job well done. Mr. Zavalanski and Mr. Mason led the team that built this amazing space for Tyler students. Tyler's new space boasts large square footage for physical activity, restrooms, office space, and storage to support the PE program. Students were impressed to see the detailed "books" involved in building this new space and the math and reading required by these professionals. Classes have already begun in the new space.

Lisa Thayne, 5th grade teacher at Tyler Elementary, was recently published in the Journal of the
Greater Washington Reading Council
.  Her article on teaching our students to be global thinkers goes beyond the planning phase.  She has put it into action!  Take a look: http://gwrc.net/pages/j13.htm.  Great job Mrs. Thayne!

Watch DOGS Launch Event a HUGE Success

On September 22nd, Tyler's fathers and father-figures came out in full force to support the launch event of Watch DOGS.  This innovative volunteer program brings positive male role models into schools.  With over 200 in attendance (and 45 pizzas consumed!), the evening resulted in a commitment of more than 40 full days of volunteering from Tyler's newest Watch DOGS.  Thank you to Ben Perilla, Dan Bomar, Keith Matias, Kenneth Jenkins, Ben Houle, and Randy Smith for getting Watch DOGS off the ground.  Thank you to Michelle Wilson for your support of the logistics of the event.  If you are interested in being a Tyler Watch DOG, please contact the Top Dog Coordinator, Ben Perilla, at bap6g1@gmail.com.  More information can be found on Tyler’s ‘Watch DOGS’ page, located on the left navigation bar of Tyler’s main webpage.
