Tyler's PTO Family Dance a Big Hit!
Many families came out to join DJ Dove at the Tyler PTO Family Dance on Friday, May 15th.  The 50s themed dance proved to be a big hit!  Everyone danced to tunes old and new while enjoying snacks prepared by our PTO.  All food and money donations from tonight's event will go to the Haymarket Food Pantry.
Tyler Earns 4th place for Highest Pennies for Patients
Tyler Elementary was named the #4 highest fundraiser for the Pennies for Patients campaign in the National Capital Area.  That's right...#4 in the entire DC area!!  This year's 1st Annual Penny Fair put us over the top raising $7,852.17.  The Gainesville/Haymarket community came together to raise funds for this worthy cause and to celebrate Dominic Ortega, 7th grade student at Reagan Middle School, who recently beat cancer.  Dominic's mom and 5th grade Tyler teacher, Mrs. Lisa Thayne, coordinated the hugely successful event and is looking forward to beating this year's amount.  We can't wait to see you all back again next year!
Tyler is Named a School of Excellence for the Eighth Time
On Friday, April 17th, Tyler staff and students celebrated being named a School of Excellence for the eighth time.  Mrs. Alyson Satterwhite, School Board member for the Gainesville District, and Mr. Todd Erickson, Associate Superintendent for Central Elementary Schools, joined the party to share their accolades for a job well done.  Miss Addison Hitzel, SCA President, shared her remarks on why Tyler is such a special place to be.  The ceremony included a strings performance by several fifth grade students.  Perhaps the highlight of the ceremony was the entire student body singing their rendition of 'Happy', led by Tyler music educator, Mrs. Sarah Fraker.  As is tradition, the ceremony concluded with the singing of the school song.

Tyler's 1st Annual Penny Faire a HUGE Success!
On Saturday, March 7th, the Gainesville and Haymarket communities came out to Tyler to join Dominic Ortega in celebrating his defeat of cancer.  The event not only was a party for such a momentous occasion but served to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Lisa Thayne, event manager, 5th grade Tyler teacher, and mom to local hero, Dominic Ortega, coordinated the event that ultimately raised $4,500 in 5 hours.  The event included performances, a silent auction, several vendors, concessions, a food truck, a mechanical bull, space ball, moon bounce...AND most importantly, our local hero beating cancer DOMINIC ORTEGA.  Dominic is a 7th grade student at Reagan Middle School who recently completed his treatment and BEAT CANCER! Be sure to support your Pennies for Patients campaign.  Donations can be made to https://donate.lls.org/lls/donate.

Miss Virginia Visits Tyler!
Miss Virginia, Courtney Garrett, visited Tyler on Wednesday, February 25th to share her important message! She wants every child to be the best they can be, to be a leader, and to treat all people kindly, especially those with disabilities. The students learned some sign language and experienced what it would be like to be unable to speak or walk or do things for yourself... What a meaningful and engaging performance!!

Don't Let Removal of Haymarket Overpass Threaten Student Safety
Closing of the Old Carolina/Jefferson Street overpass (September 21) eliminates a popular student pathway. But Route 15 is no place for pedestrians and cyclists. Urge students to stay safe and avoid this crowded and dangerous route when not in motorized vehicles.
